Because Week 1 is still part of the drop/add period, students will have a grace period in completing this assignment. Though I recommend you complete this by the first Sunday of the session, this part of the week one module will be due the second Wednesday of the session.
WEEK 1 Discussion Board:
1. Take 10-15 minutes to find a news article about religion from a reliable news source that uses mostly fact-based reporting (AP, PBS, Reuters, CBS, ABC, NBC, NPR, Wall Street Journal, etc.). Religion does not have to be the primary focus of the article, but religion should be an important dimension of the article. After you find a good article, read it and complete the following:
Provide a link to the story (if it’s available on a website).
Summarize the article in your own words, in approximately three to four sentences.
In another four to five sentences (or more) tell us what religious practices or traditions are featured in the news article and why you think religion matters to the event being discussed.
Conclude by telling us more generally how you think religion relates to history, politics, society, and/or culture.
Hint: The textbook will be helpful for helping you understand the different ways religion informs history, culture, politics, ethics, etc. As always, the best answers will incorporate readings and other course material to create a more objective, fact-based (i.e., not opinionated) post.
Note: If you’re wondering about the reliability of your source, find the most reliable news sources as determined by a third party research group: https://adfontesmedia.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/Media-Bias-Chart-9.0_Jan-2022-Unlicensed-Social-Media_Low-scaled.jpg (Links to an external site.) Reliable sources are in the top quadrant (outlined in green).
2. Give us two or three reasons as to why it might be important to study multiple religious traditions? On a more personal note, tell us how learning about religions might enhance your career and/or social life? The best answers will incorporate this week’s readings to support your reasoning.

Journal prompts
Chittister writes that “Benedictine spirituality is about listening to four realities: the Gospels, the Rule, one another, and the world.” Why do you think that Chittister believes that listening to all four of these is important? How would you finish the following sentence: “I believe that being a faithful disciple of Jesus Christ requires a willingness to listen to ______________.”
What do you think Chittister is trying to get at when she writes: “Prayer in Benedictine spirituality is not an interruption of our busy lives nor is it a higher act”?
Chittister writes: “When we start listening to the Word of God, people have a right to expect something new of us.” Do you think that Christians have this expectation that listening to the Word of God will bring about something new? Do you think the world around us has this expectation? Why do you think this is so?
Chittister reminds us that we are a culture of quick fixes and that this often gets in the way of our recognizing that a life of discipleship is a slow and sometimes even painful process. Does this resonate with your own experience?
Prayer in the Benedictine tradition, explains Chittister, is “regular,” “scriptural,” “reflective,” and “communal.” Which of these aspects of prayer do you think you understand and practice? Which one(s) do you think is most absent from your own life of prayer?
Which one or ones of the “Ten Ways of Looking at Silence” most resonates with you? Why?

Reading report 1 is based on chapter 1 (Introduction: Why Morality Matters) and

Reading report 1 is based on chapter 1 (Introduction: Why Morality Matters) and chapter 2 (How to Think About Morality) of the textbook Moral Choices, an Introduction to Ethics 4th Edition by Scott Rae.
The following are the guidelines for writing the reading report. If two chapters are assigned for the particular week, the following steps must be done for each assigned chapter.
Write a half-page summary in your own words. For example, What is the main topic/subject of the chapter? What appeared to you as most important and relevant in the chapter?
– Write a half-page reflection that will present your personal opinion about the subject which is treated in the chapter. For example, Did
you enjoy reading the chapter, and why? What did you like most about it? Is there something that you did not like, and why? Is something that you read in the chapter familiar to your culture, faith, personal experience? Is there something that you learned from the chapter that can be used in everyday life?
– The whole report should be 1 page long maximum (1/2 page summary + 1/2 page reflection) per assigned chapter. Since there are two assigned chapters, it means that the weekly reading report will consist of two pages.

See Files!!!! Reflecting on the Learn material for Module 2: Week 2, write about the relationship between Scripture, the gospel, and worship. Briefly describe each in the first half of your post before describing their relationship. What should the implications be for the intersection of these three entities? Is there a symbiotic relationship between the three (corporate worship, the Scriptures, and the gospel found in the Scriptures).
