Maily RE: Forum #6: Issue – 2.4 – Can “Green” Marketing Claims Be Believed?
When a company spends more effort and money on portraying itself as environmentally friendly than on actually reducing its environmental impact, this is known as “greenwashing.” It’s a dishonest marketing ploy used to deceive customers who prefer to purchase goods and services from companies who care about the environment. Examples would be brands that use words like “eco-friendly,” “ethically created,” and “non-toxic,” together with audacious advertising claims and environmental power plays, to try to make you think their organization is so progressive that their office is carbon-neutral. Their crew exclusively consumes locally grown organic vegetables. You’re making paper straws to replace your plastic ones, but then you inform us that they aren’t made from recyclable paper. Greenwashing. While claiming that your clothes are produced in a “fair supply chain,” have you been caught using unpaid garment workers? Greenwashing. These are a few examples of how greenwashing is used. Response 2 – (at least 60 words) simple postive response
Michael RE: Forum #6: Issue – 2.4 – Can “Green” Marketing Claims Be Believed?
Greek marking claims or simply greenwashing “is not a recent phenomenon, since the mid-1980s the term has gained broad recognition and acceptance to describe the practice of making unwarranted or overblown claims of sustainability or environmental friendliness in a attempt to gain market share” (Easton-Dahl). In my opinion I believe it is a dishonest practice however I do think these advertisements have a neutral impact on society people may argue that these advertisements do spread awareness to environmental issues that should be addressed but as you will soon see the amount of people taking this information seriously is very low, according to articulate 68% of all advertisements make up facts or exaggerate the truth, they explain how “Credibility and authority are key to effective marketing”(Articulate) and “Just as orators can speak for hours without actually saying anything, brands disseminate hyperbolic ‘facts’ so widely that customers tend to either block them out or conversely see them as proof of a brand’s lack of credibility and authority.”(Articulate). Companies have reached a point were people are subconsciously ignoring the statistics if they are real or not. So while it may seem like they are trying to help spread the word get more information out about the environment it will end up having little to no effect on the population. I think that these advertisements and greenwashing only benefits the companies and does not do enough justice to spread awareness to the people, however if companies do use true and verifiable facts it can also be a positive for the company to show how far they have come in becoming more green.
