Trevor Noah says, “The [social] contract is only as strong as the people who are abiding by it. But if you think of being a black person in America who is living in Minneapolis or Minnesota or any place where you’re not having a good time, ask yourself this question when you watch those people, “What vested interest do they have in maintaining the contract? Why don’t we all loot? …Think about how many people who don’t have, the have-nots, who say, “you know what, I’m still going to play by the rules because I still want society to work and to exist.” And then some members of that society… watch time and time again how the contract that they have signed is not being honored by the society who has forced them to sign it with them…There is no contract if law and the people in power don’t hold up their end of it.” I want you to write a 600-750 word reflection on how Trevor Noah’s remarks change your view or don’t change your view about social contract theory. If you agree with some or all of what he says, say what you agree with and why and draw his remarks back to some of our readings regarding social contract theory. If you disagree with some of all of what he says, say what you disagree with and why and draw his remarks back to some of our readings regarding social contract theory. This is an opportunity for you to think through and reflect on the Social Contract theory tradition and some of the important social and political problems we experience today. All of the usual Journal Grading criteria apply. Journal assignments should be roughly 1 1/2 to 2 pages (600-750 words) in length, typed, double-spaced, with 1” margins and 12” font. Please write in complete, grammatically correct sentences. Please avoid spelling and syntactical errors and be sure to fully address every part of the assignment.
